1. Urge members of your congregation to endorse the declaration of principles for a Presidential executive order to ban torture
If you have not yet endorsed yourself, please do so. Click here
The web site provides suggestions and resources for encouraging your friends and members of your congregation to endorse online.  Now is an important time to endorse.

2. Register for the important conference: The National Summit on Torture: Religious Faith, Torture and Our National Soul.  It will be held at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia on September 11&12. It is co-sponsored by Evangelicals for Human Rights, the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, Rabbis for Human Rights – North America and the Islamic Society of North America. Click here for more information and registration.

3.  Encourage Catholic parishes to use the new curriculum
"Torture is A Moral Issue: A Catholic Study Guide"
written by David Gibson, who served on the Catholic News Service editorial staff for more than 37 years and was editor of Origins, CNS Documentary Service, from its inception until April 2007. The curriculum is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Click Here  for a copy.

4. Ask the Presidential and Congressional Candidates

The campaign season provides a unique opportunity for people of faith to ask presidential candidates questions about torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees. Learn more.

5. Visit the new NRCAT online store!  Before the end of July, NRCAT will have an online store for your use. You will be able to order NRCAT brochures and DVD’s of Ghosts of Abu Ghraib and to purchase bumper stickers, posters of the banners as well as banners themselves.  You will be able to click on it on the NRCAT home page.

6.
Share the News:  Top Administration Officials Planned Torture in the White House.
Top Administration officials met, with the President’s approval, to authorize interrogators to torture important detainees. Click here  to find information about writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to express your concern about these meetings and to inform the public about them.

7. Display an anti-torture banner

330 congregations displayed an anti-torture banner on the exteriors of their building during the month of June. Many of them will continue to display
the banner publicly until U.S.-sponsored torture is ended either by a Presidential executive order or through legislation.

Your congregation is still able to order a banner and join them in this witness. You can choose between two slogans (“torture is wrong.” and “Torture is a Moral Issue”) and two sizes (2’x6’ and 3’x9’).  Each banner will have the NRCAT logo, and you can order the banners online. Click here  for more information.

Other congregations will display their banner on:

October 24 – November 16 during the period which includes World Community Day, Election Day, and Veterans’ Day with a call to honor our country's values by stopping U.S.-sponsored torture,

and
January 9 – March 1, 2009 urging the new President to issue an executive order that will ban U.S.-sponsored torture,

and d
uring the month of June 2009 –Torture Awareness Month.

Again NRCAT will encourage congregations in all 50 states and DC to participate in those three opportunities for a public witness against U.S.-sponsored torture.
